🎥 WATCH: How to Lead a Partner Who Won't Move in Aikido

Back in the 1980s, I had a training partner who was much bigger than me and made me earn every throw. I got locked down with him all the time, until I stopped pulling and started switching techniques. This week's video is about how to lead a partner who won't move.

I get into what a horse and a carrot teach you about leading, why I separate success from whether your partner falls, connection before contact, and why your shoulders can never be too loose.

🎥 WATCH: What Your Ukemi Tells Your Training Partner

I get into why falling early takes the last 10% of the technique away from tori, why you have to chase down the sempai (and the one way n...
🎥 WATCH: Why Your Good Habits Stall You Between Shodan and Nidan
I got nidan eight or nine months after shodan, and I did not feel it. Not even a little. So I tried to train my way into deserving it, and my back went out. This week's video is about what's actually supposed to change between shodan and nidan, and why trying harder wasn't it. I get into why shodan really means "beginner," what I look for in students at each rank, and why the next step asks you...
🎥 WATCH: Why Your Aikido Training Starts Before the Bow-In
In my first Aikido class in Japan back in 1987, I noticed something in the first five minutes that had nothing to do with technique: the senior students were warming up their attention, not just their bodies. This week's video is about what that actually looks like — and the specific routine I still use before every class I take or teach. I get into why chatting before bow-in has a real cost, h...
