WATCH: Top Ikkyo Fix (2,000 Views and Counting)

Wow—Ikkyo is dominating my channel right now! According to my YouTube analytics, the top 3 videos from the last three months have all been about Ikkyo.

Here’s the number one—already approaching 2,000 views:

Is Ikkyo a challenge for you or your students?

One common issue I see is the collapse of the lower hand during execution. To compensate, many people reach out abruptly and stiffly—which doesn’t work either.

ikkyo don't push

If you saw my previous video, you’ll remember we used a shoto almost like a horse whip—calling uke’s attention to the space under their arm, encouraging forward movement. But that exercise wasn’t just for uke. It also helped nage become more aware of the space—and that awareness is key to real progress.

In today’s video, we continue this theme, now without the shoto and from a standing position. We return to a more orthodox version of ikkyo, but with an amplified focus on space.

Instead of reacting stiffly to our partner’s arm, we use an upward motion that invites cooperation—rather than “tripping the alarm,” so to speak.

I hope today’s video gives you some new insights, inspiration, and motivation to help you make the most of your training and take your Aikido to the next level.

Let me know in the comments:

  • Do you find Ikkyo to be a challenging technique?
  • And if you’re an instructor, what kinds of exercises do you do with your students to help them with Ikkyo?

🎥 WATCH: The Skill Most Aikido Students Don’t Realize They’re Missing
Many Aikido students focus almost entirely on learning techniques. But there’s another skill that often gets overlooked—and it can make a huge difference in how quickly you improve. It’s the skill of how to watch. Experienced practitioners observe demonstrations very differently than beginners. They notice posture, timing, alignment, and connection—not just the obvious movements. In this week’s...
🎥 WATCH: Why Aikido Feels Impossible When You First Start Training
Many people watch Aikido and think it looks effortless. Then they step on the mat for the first time and suddenly it feels… almost impossible. Why does that happen? In this week’s training video, I explain one of the biggest reasons beginners struggle with Aikido—and why what you see in advanced practice can be very misleading. Understanding this can completely change how you approach your trai...
🎥 WATCH: Why In-Person Training Still Matters
This week I want to talk about something that’s becoming more relevant every year. We now have access to an incredible amount of Aikido information—videos, books, seminars online, and more. But there is still something essential about Aikido that can’t be transmitted through a screen. In this week’s video, I share why the real transmission of Aikido still happens in person—and why training with...
