🎥 WATCH: The Real Difference Between Dan Grades

People ask me all the time what actually separates the different dan grades in Aikido. The honest answer is that technique alone doesn't explain it — and most people asking the question are already sensing that something else is going on.

That explained it — but it also confirmed what I look for when deciding to test someone for a dan grade: not more, or more complicated, techniques, but depth. A dan grade reflects a shift in how you organize yourself, not just what you know.

The jump from one dan to the next isn't necessarily about harder techniques. It's about doing techniques fundamentally differently, and beginning to embody the principles inside them. At one level, practitioners are still refining technique. At another level, you start to disappear into the technique.

The margin for error shrinks, and partners attack with more sincerity, speed, and precision — so your lines and entries need to be cleaner and your movement smoother. Connection replaces control as the organizing principle. At the beginner and shodan level we're doing techniques on people. By yodan, techniques start happening through us instead of by us.

🎥 WATCH: Why Advanced Aikidoka Train Completely Differently Than Beginners
If you've ever watched a senior student train and thought, "that doesn't look anything like what I'm doing," you're right — and the difference isn't just skill level. It's a fundamentally different relationship with the training itself. In this week's video, I share a story about a sandan student who once told me why advanced students stop over-explaining: "That's when we understand that we don...
🎥 WATCH: Why Japanese Aikido Masters Move Differently
Have you ever watched a senior instructor move and felt like something was different, but couldn't quite say what? I've felt that for years. I spent nearly a decade living and training in Japan, and there's a quality to how the senior instructors there move that I've never seen fully replicated anywhere else. In this week's video, I try to put words to that difference - and what it actually is....
🎥 WATCH: Aikido Trains Your Nervous System
Have you ever felt like your Aikido wasn't improving? Maybe you've even wondered whether you were getting worse. Most of us have experienced that feeling. In this week's video, I share one idea that completely changed how I think about long-term training. What if Aikido isn't primarily teaching techniques at all? What if every repetition is actually teaching your nervous system? That simple shi...
