Many people assume that when Aikido feels confusing, it means they’re making mistakes or not “getting it.”

2 person attack (Ni-nin gake)

In this week’s video, I explain why confusion is actually a normal and necessary part of learning. When old habits start to fall away before new ones are fully formed, both the body and the mind need time to reorganize.

If you’ve ever felt unsure, frustrated, or uncomfortable in your training, this video may help you see that experience differently.

Let’s check it out.

🌿 Your Practice Prompt

During your next class…

The next time you feel confused in training, pause and notice where the confusion is showing up. Is it in your thinking, or in your body? Instead of trying to solve it, stay with the feeling and allow repetition to do its work.

💬 What changed? How did it feel different?

Share your experience—I read every reply.

🎥 WATCH: How Aikido Training Evolves Over Time
When you first start Aikido, your focus is simple: Just get through class without getting hurt. You’re trying to remember the movements, figure out which foot goes where, and survive your first attempts at ukemi. But over time, something interesting happens. Your training begins to shift — from survival…to refinement…to sensitivity, timing, and efficiency. In this week’s video, I talk about how...
🎥 WATCH: Why Aikido Progress Can’t Be Rushed
Have you ever felt like you’re behind in your Aikido progress? Behind others. Behind where you “should” be. Behind in rank or skill. This week’s video is about something most practitioners don’t talk about: Why Aikido can’t be rushed. And why trying to force progress can actually slow you down. I share: Why plateaus are a milestone Why collecting techniques isn’t real progress Why deep unde...
🎥 WATCH: Why Maai Creates Calm (Not Panic) in Aikido
Most people think distance in Aikido is about how far apart you stand. It isn’t. Maai is a relationship — constantly shifting based on your partner, intent, timing, and presence. When distance is off, panic creeps in.When distance is right, movement becomes simple… and you suddenly have options. This video explores:• why distance can’t be measured• how it affects calm and timing• how to start ...
