🎥 WATCH: Aikido Trains Your Nervous System

Have you ever felt like your Aikido wasn't improving?

Maybe you've even wondered whether you were getting worse.

Most of us have experienced that feeling.

In this week's video, I share one idea that completely changed how I think about long-term training.

What if Aikido isn't primarily teaching techniques at all?

What if every repetition is actually teaching your nervous system?

That simple shift explains why progress often feels invisible for long stretches, why breakthroughs seem to arrive suddenly, and why experienced practitioners often move so effortlessly.

If you've ever felt frustrated by your progress—or simply wondered why Aikido takes so many years to develop—I think you'll enjoy this one.

As always, thank you for training with me each week.

🌿 Your Practice Prompt

During your next class, spend less attention trying to perform the "perfect" technique and more attention observing your nervous system.

  • Can you notice unnecessary tension?
  • Can you recover calm more quickly after each attack?
  • Can you become just a little more sensitive to your partner's movement?

Rather than asking, "Did I execute the technique correctly?" ask, "What did my nervous system learn today?"

Share your experience—I read every reply.

🎥 WATCH: Why Trying Harder Makes Your Aikido Worse
There's a specific moment every Aikido student eventually hits: you stop trying to force the technique, and it works. In this week's video I dig into what "fighting" your partner actually means technically, and why it has nothing to do with being aggressive. I cover why your nervous system reads resistance the same way it reads a handshake, why the technique should start with uke's intention in...
🎥 WATCH: Why Ikkyo Backfires When You Do It On Someone
Ikkyo is usually the first technique students learn — which is exactly why almost everyone assumes it's the easiest. After 45 years of practicing it, teaching it, and taking ukemi for it from partners at every level, I can tell you it's the opposite. In this week's video I get into what separates a jammed, cranked version of ikkyo from the version that feels like the floor disappearing under yo...
🎥 WATCH: Why Improvement Gets Harder at the Top
Something changes once you're one of the senior students on the mat — and it's not what most people expect. Improvement doesn't get easier. It gets harder, because the outside pressure that used to sharpen you starts to disappear. Your training partners are, in a way, your students now. They're watching what you do whether you mean them to or not. And without something pushing back on you, it's...
