🎥 WATCH: What Self-Development in Aikido Really Demands

Self-development, discipline, and focus are the top reasons new students say they came to Aikido. In this week's video I get into what those words actually require once you're a few years in.

I share a couple of stories from my own students, including why the students who say they want discipline most often have the worst attendance, and why focus is really about removing interference, not adding concentration.

🌿 Your Practice Prompt

Pick one training partner you'd normally avoid, ideally because they intimidate you a little. Train with them this week and notice what discomfort actually feels like versus what you assumed it would feel like.

Share your experience—I read every reply.

🎥 WATCH: Why the Week After a Seminar Is the Real Seminar
Every seminar I attend as a student changes something in my Aikido, and then the first class back at my own dojo, I feel like a fish out of water. In the early days, I thought that was a problem. This week's video is about why it isn't. I get into what your nervous system is doing the week after a seminar, why forcing makes the awkward period last longer, and why I recommend delaying your decis...
🎥 WATCH: How to Lead a Partner Who Won't Move in Aikido
Back in the 1980s, I had a training partner who was much bigger than me and made me earn every throw. I got locked down with him all the time, until I stopped pulling and started switching techniques. This week's video is about how to lead a partner who won't move. I get into what a horse and a carrot teach you about leading, why I separate success from whether your partner falls, connection be...
🎥 WATCH: What Your Ukemi Tells Your Training Partner
When my back went out in Japan, my sempai told me they'd seen it coming from the way I took ukemi. When I asked why nobody warned me, one of them said something I've never forgotten. This week's video is about how much your ukemi tells your partner about you. I get into why falling early takes the last 10% of the technique away from tori, why you have to chase down the sempai (and the one way n...
