WATCH: Ryotedori Kokyunage Centering | From Lying Down to Standing Kokyu Ho

Do you ever feel your shoulders tighten when you try Kokyunage or Kokyu Ho?

ikkyo don't push

In this lesson, we’ll work through a progression that starts lying down on the tatami, moves into hanmi handachi, and finally brings us to standing.

By releasing the shoulders and learning to move from the hips, you’ll find it much easier to center, ground yourself, and generate power without strain. And working from lying down on the tatami helps people improve their posture believe it or not.

I hope today’s video gives you some insight, inspiration, and motivation to help you make the most of your training and take your Aikido to the next level.

Let’s check it out. And be sure to stick around until the end for a special announcement.

🎥 WATCH: Why Aikido Feels Confusing at First (And Why That’s Normal)
Many people assume that when Aikido feels confusing, it means they’re making mistakes or not “getting it.” In this week’s video, I explain why confusion is actually a normal and necessary part of learning. When old habits start to fall away before new ones are fully formed, both the body and the mind need time to reorganize. If you’ve ever felt unsure, frustrated, or uncomfortable in your trai...
🎥 WATCH: Aikido for Beginners: What I Wish I Knew in My First Year
If you’re new to Aikido, there’s a moment that almost everyone goes through. The first few weeks feel exciting. You’re learning something new every class. Then, suddenly, it feels like you’ve hit a wall. Progress slows down. Frustration creeps in. And you start wondering if you’re doing something wrong. In this week’s video, I explain why that phase is not a problem — it’s actually one of the ...
🎥 WATCH: How to Stay Calm During Fast Attacks in Aikido
Fast attacks can feel overwhelming — but speed itself isn’t usually the issue. In this week’s video, I talk about why our internal reaction to speed matters more than how fast an attack actually is, and how calm can be trained before pressure hits. If you’ve ever felt tense, flinchy, or mentally overloaded during fast attacks, this video will help reframe what’s really happening — and how to w...
