WATCH: Stop Collecting Techniques — Go Deeper Instead

We’ve all met that Aikido student who tries to collect techniques like they’re checking items off a list.

More waza. More variations. More cool moves.

2 person attack (Ni-nin gake)

But during my years in Japan, I discovered something very different:
Learning many techniques doesn’t lead to high skill.
Depth does.

Sometimes we’d spend weeks or even months on a single movement, executing the classic version of it, followed by endless variations. And that’s where the real transformation happened.

In this week’s video, I share what Japanese teachers actually focused on, including one moment when Yamaguchi Sensei stopped an entire room of senior black belts — and why that lesson still matters today.

Let’s check it out.

🌿 Your Practice Prompt

During your next class…

• Try slowing down one familiar technique and look for something new.
• Notice whether softness or timing changes when you vary your approach.
• Ask a partner afterward: Where did you feel tension? Where did I lose balance?

💬 What did you discover about looseness and connection?

Share your experience—I read every reply.

🎥 WATCH: Why Aikido Feels Confusing at First (And Why That’s Normal)
Many people assume that when Aikido feels confusing, it means they’re making mistakes or not “getting it.” In this week’s video, I explain why confusion is actually a normal and necessary part of learning. When old habits start to fall away before new ones are fully formed, both the body and the mind need time to reorganize. If you’ve ever felt unsure, frustrated, or uncomfortable in your trai...
🎥 WATCH: Aikido for Beginners: What I Wish I Knew in My First Year
If you’re new to Aikido, there’s a moment that almost everyone goes through. The first few weeks feel exciting. You’re learning something new every class. Then, suddenly, it feels like you’ve hit a wall. Progress slows down. Frustration creeps in. And you start wondering if you’re doing something wrong. In this week’s video, I explain why that phase is not a problem — it’s actually one of the ...
🎥 WATCH: How to Stay Calm During Fast Attacks in Aikido
Fast attacks can feel overwhelming — but speed itself isn’t usually the issue. In this week’s video, I talk about why our internal reaction to speed matters more than how fast an attack actually is, and how calm can be trained before pressure hits. If you’ve ever felt tense, flinchy, or mentally overloaded during fast attacks, this video will help reframe what’s really happening — and how to w...
