As nage do you often wonder: How do I execute sutemi waza without relying on force? And as uke, you might ask: How do I roll safely when my partner does sutemi waza - a sacrifice throw?

ikkyo don't push

In this lesson, we’ll look at how to keep the chest open and expansive, even when you’re the one falling as nage. You’ll see how using the natural weight of your body creates an effective throw without muscling it.

For uke, we’ll focus on building confidence in forward rolls. And for instructors, I’ll show you how to safely introduce sutemi waza to practitioners of all levels — even beginners.

I hope today’s video gives you some insight, inspiration, and motivation to help you make the most of your training and take your Aikido to the next level.

Let’s check it out. And be sure to stick around until the end for a special announcement.

🎥 WATCH: What “Calm” Really Means in Aikido Training
What does it actually mean to be calm in Aikido? It’s not about pretending, suppressing nerves, or trying to relax on command. In this week’s video, I explain calm as a trained physical state—one that gives you more time, more choice, and better technique. If you’ve ever felt rushed, tense, or stuck using force against force, this perspective may change how you train. Let’s check it out. 💙 En...
🎥 WATCH: Why Aikido Feels Confusing at First (And Why That’s Normal)
Most people assume progress in Aikido comes from trying harder. Sometimes it does — but often, effort applied in the wrong place or in the wrong way actually slows you down. In this week’s video, I talk about why forcing technique can mask timing issues, dull sensitivity, and reduce the information your body needs to make better decisions. This isn’t about being passive — it’s about learning w...
🎥 WATCH: Why Aikido Feels Confusing at First (And Why That’s Normal)
Many people assume that when Aikido feels confusing, it means they’re making mistakes or not “getting it.” In this week’s video, I explain why confusion is actually a normal and necessary part of learning. When old habits start to fall away before new ones are fully formed, both the body and the mind need time to reorganize. If you’ve ever felt unsure, frustrated, or uncomfortable in your trai...
