WATCH: 🌀 Loosen Up in Aikido: The Hidden Key to Real Power

Have you ever been told to “relax” in Aikido?

Yep, me too — but in Japan, my teachers never said “relax.”

2 person attack (Ni-nin gake)

They said “chikara wo nuide.”

It doesn’t mean to chill out or go limp. It means remove strength — release unnecessary tension so your power can move freely through your body.

In this week’s video, I share what that really means — and how you can train it, no matter your age or experience.

I also go over three ways to loosen up without relying on endless ukemi sessions (though that kind of training, under the right teacher, is incredibly powerful).

These small shifts can completely change your Aikido — making your movement more alive, connected, and even paradoxically heavier to your partner.

And for those of you who’ve ever trained with someone who feels 400 pounds but still moves like water — that’s the result of chikara wo nuide.

Let’s check it out.

🌿 Your Practice Prompt

During your next class…

💨 Notice where tension hides — shoulders, hips, hands.
🌀 Try loosening just one joint at a time while keeping your structure.
🤝 Feel if your partner’s grip or movement changes as you soften.

💬 What did you discover about looseness and connection?

Share your experience—I read every reply.

P.S. This video also is part of a new playlist: Aikido Insights with Lia Suzuki — a series of short, concept-driven talks exploring the philosophy, mindset, and “why” behind Aikido.

🎥 WATCH: What “Calm” Really Means in Aikido Training
What does it actually mean to be calm in Aikido? It’s not about pretending, suppressing nerves, or trying to relax on command. In this week’s video, I explain calm as a trained physical state—one that gives you more time, more choice, and better technique. If you’ve ever felt rushed, tense, or stuck using force against force, this perspective may change how you train. Let’s check it out. 💙 En...
🎥 WATCH: Why Aikido Feels Confusing at First (And Why That’s Normal)
Most people assume progress in Aikido comes from trying harder. Sometimes it does — but often, effort applied in the wrong place or in the wrong way actually slows you down. In this week’s video, I talk about why forcing technique can mask timing issues, dull sensitivity, and reduce the information your body needs to make better decisions. This isn’t about being passive — it’s about learning w...
🎥 WATCH: Why Aikido Feels Confusing at First (And Why That’s Normal)
Many people assume that when Aikido feels confusing, it means they’re making mistakes or not “getting it.” In this week’s video, I explain why confusion is actually a normal and necessary part of learning. When old habits start to fall away before new ones are fully formed, both the body and the mind need time to reorganize. If you’ve ever felt unsure, frustrated, or uncomfortable in your trai...
