WATCH: How Unconventional Hanmi Handachi Shihonage Can Help You Cultivate Grounding in Aikido

Do you do any centering or grounding exercises at your dojo? Do you—or your students—ever feel the need to be more centered, more grounded?

Today’s video picks up where we left off last week. It’s from last year’s 5-Day Summer Camp here in Los Angeles.

If you remember, in last week’s class, we started with kokyu ho and then moved into hanmi handachi kokyu nage—using the form as a way to explore grounding and centering.

In this video, we continue that exploration by working with a somewhat unconventional version of hanmi handachi shihonage—still with the intention of cultivating that same sense of centeredness and groundedness.

I hope today’s video gives you some insight, inspiration, and motivation to take your training—and your Aikido—to the next level.

Let’s dive in. And be sure to stick around until the end for a special announcement.

WATCH: Fix Your Yokomenuchi Spacing
Space and timing are everything in Aikido, right? I think that's especially the case with Yokomenuchi attacks. Many ukes pull back at the last second, worried about hitting their partner. But that hesitation actually prevents real learning for tori.  In this lesson, we’ll look at how to keep your attacks clean and precise as uke, while on the side of nage, we'll practice entering with heavines...
WATCH: Aikido Katadori Nikkyo | Exploring Atemi & Ato-Geiko Training Insights
Sometimes the smallest choices in Aikido make the biggest difference — like a subtle atemi or movement into spaces, such as that between the shoulder and ear. As we noted last week, katadori can be pretty challenging, no matter which technique you’re working on. If you remember, we practiced an exercise where uke grabs nage’s lapel, and nage simply focused on being heavy, falling back, and exp...
WATCH: Master Katadori Nikkyo with These Aikido Tips
Katadori can be pretty challenging, no matter what technique you’re doing. When someone grabs our lapel, the natural reaction is to contract or collapse the chest. We then lose our center and are no longer grounded.   In today's video, I had my students do an exercise where they’re simply falling backwards, against uke’s resistance. But uke is asked to provide enough resistance that nage MUST ...
