🎥 WATCH: Why Trying Harder Makes Your Aikido Worse

There's a specific moment every Aikido student eventually hits: you stop trying to force the technique, and it works. In this week's video I dig into what "fighting" your partner actually means technically, and why it has nothing to do with being aggressive.

I cover why your nervous system reads resistance the same way it reads a handshake, why the technique should start with uke's intention instead of your own, and a practical way to train toward this: slow down and give the technique permission to fail.

As always, thank you for training with me each week.

🌿 Your Practice Prompt

This week, pick one technique and deliberately let it fail at least twice before you try to make it work. Notice where in your body you were pushing versus where you were simply out of alignment. Tell your partner what you noticed afterward.

Share your experience—I read every reply.

🎥 WATCH: Why Ikkyo Backfires When You Do It On Someone
Ikkyo is usually the first technique students learn — which is exactly why almost everyone assumes it's the easiest. After 45 years of practicing it, teaching it, and taking ukemi for it from partners at every level, I can tell you it's the opposite. In this week's video I get into what separates a jammed, cranked version of ikkyo from the version that feels like the floor disappearing under yo...
🎥 WATCH: Why Improvement Gets Harder at the Top
Something changes once you're one of the senior students on the mat — and it's not what most people expect. Improvement doesn't get easier. It gets harder, because the outside pressure that used to sharpen you starts to disappear. Your training partners are, in a way, your students now. They're watching what you do whether you mean them to or not. And without something pushing back on you, it's...
🎥 WATCH: The Real Difference Between Dan Grades
People ask me all the time what actually separates the different dan grades in Aikido. The honest answer is that technique alone doesn't explain it — and most people asking the question are already sensing that something else is going on. That explained it — but it also confirmed what I look for when deciding to test someone for a dan grade: not more, or more complicated, techniques, but depth....
