WATCH: Fix Your Yokomenuchi Spacing

Space and timing are everything in Aikido, right? I think that's especially the case with Yokomenuchi attacks.

ikkyo don't push

Many ukes pull back at the last second, worried about hitting their partner. But that hesitation actually prevents real learning for tori.

In this lesson, we’ll look at how to keep your attacks clean and precise as uke, while on the side of nage, we'll practice entering with heaviness, good posture, and awareness of space. You’ll see how to set yourself up for success, maintain accurate lines, and use your center so the technique happens naturally—without relying on force.

I hope today’s video gives you some insight, inspiration, and motivation to help you make the most of your training and take your Aikido to the next level.

Let’s check it out. And be sure to stick around until the end for a special announcement.

Let me know in the comments:

  • Do you find yokomenuchi to be a challenging attack?
  • And if you’re an instructor, what kinds of exercises do you do with your students to help them with yokomenuchi?

WATCH: 2-Person Attack - Morotedori Kokyunage | How to avoid getting locked down.
Have you ever been locked down in Morotedori? Have you ever been locked down in Morotedori? (In Japan we call it ryote mochi — two hands grabbing one wrist.) It’s the kind of grip that can stop the whole moment and leave you hunting for timing. In today’s lesson I show a simple sequence to absorb that pressure into your center, then deflect it upward so your partner’s center rises and Kokyunag...
WATCH: How to Stay Grounded in Shihonage — Katatedori & Ryotedori
Have you (or your students) ever been doing a technique from katatedori with no trouble, only to suddenly get confused when trying to execute the same technique from ryotedori or morotedori? The posture falls apart, the body stiffen up, and maybe you / your students even grab the wrong wrist. In today’s lesson, we’ll work on two of these grabs, in the context of shihonage. We also study how to...
WATCH: Tsuki Kotegaeshi: How to Enter Cleanly, Place Your Hand, and Build a Heavy Connection
Is kotegaeshi a challenge for you or your students? If you’re intermediate or advanced level, maybe you struggle with maintaining the connection throughout the movement? Or if you’re a beginner, maybe the footwork and hand placement trips you up? In today’s lesson, we’ll work through a progression that starts with polishing the entrance and then gradually adds more and more elements of the tec...
