00;00;00;00 - 00;00;04;19
In a world full of online content,
in-person aikido training
00;00;04;19 - 00;00;06;09
remains irreplaceable.
00;00;06;09 - 00;00;08;22
If you look around, we've got information
everywhere.
00;00;08;22 - 00;00;10;14
We're inundated with it.
00;00;10;14 - 00;00;12;24
And Aikido is not the exception.
00;00;12;24 - 00;00;16;08
We've got videos, books, explanations
00;00;16;08 - 00;00;19;17
And here I am
making videos every week as well.
00;00;19;17 - 00;00;23;23
So I've made, action videos weekly.
00;00;23;26 - 00;00;28;10
And if you've noticed recently like today
I'm making these, I call them talking
00;00;28;10 - 00;00;33;03
head videos where I discuss
certain points about Aikido.
00;00;33;06 - 00;00;35;16
So and I've got some books.
00;00;35;16 - 00;00;37;22
By the way,
if you're interested in my books.
00;00;37;22 - 00;00;41;00
Links are below in the
in the description section.
00;00;41;03 - 00;00;44;12
So anyway, we've got all of this content
00;00;44;12 - 00;00;46;21
and it can be quite overwhelming
sometimes.
00;00;46;21 - 00;00;51;03
And it's all helpful
if it's used in the right way.
00;00;51;06 - 00;00;55;05
So the real transmission,
00;00;55;08 - 00;00;57;15
the real transmission of quality
00;00;57;15 - 00;01;02;03
aikido happens in person.
00;01;02;06 - 00;01;05;28
Yes. Watch videos, read books,
00;01;06;01 - 00;01;10;17
We'd train and train and train
and not talk.
00;01;10;19 - 00;01;15;07
When I lived in Japan, actually,
my students in my dojo do this too.
00;01;15;10 - 00;01;18;05
Move move move move move.
00;01;18;05 - 00;01;18;23
And the.
00;01;18;23 - 00;01;21;03
The explanation is really the resistance.
00;01;21;03 - 00;01;22;12
When you run into resistance
00;01;22;12 - 00;01;25;12
and you can't throw your partner,
that's that's the discussion.
00;01;25;19 - 00;01;27;23
Then you have to find your way through it.
00;01;27;23 - 00;01;28;18
Right.
00;01;28;18 - 00;01;31;20
Then the discussions and the analysis
and all of that
00;01;31;25 - 00;01;33;25
happened at the pub afterwards.
00;01;33;25 - 00;01;37;00
I find that to be really an excellent way.
00;01;37;03 - 00;01;40;24
Of course, sometimes
sensei would say stuff to us, but
00;01;40;24 - 00;01;46;11
just a word or two, you know, he would say
something like, you know, enter.
00;01;46;14 - 00;01;48;08
Enter further.
00;01;48;11 - 00;01;49;26
But he didn't want you to stop and go.
00;01;49;26 - 00;01;53;21
Oh, I see, because,
if we enter further, it's going to know,
00;01;53;24 - 00;01;55;15
just like, keep moving, keep moving.
00;01;55;15 - 00;01;56;18
Now do it this way.
00;01;56;18 - 00;01;58;14
Now add this to it. Now add that to it.
00;01;58;14 - 00;02;00;17
Now take this away from it.
00;02;00;17 - 00;02;02;29
this in-person transmission.
00;02;02;29 - 00;02;04;25
Hey sorry to interrupt the video,
00;02;04;25 - 00;02;08;26
but some of you have been asking
how you can get a copy of my book.
00;02;08;29 - 00;02;10;18
The teacher.
00;02;10;18 - 00;02;13;01
The book includes a wide range of topics,
00;02;13;01 - 00;02;17;18
including from horseback
riding to budo, the Japan experience
00;02;17;18 - 00;02;21;14
and returning home building intuition,
attracting
00;02;21;14 - 00;02;25;08
new students
to aikido, aikido and nonviolence.
00;02;25;15 - 00;02;28;06
Leading by example women in Aikido.
Arrogance.
00;02;28;06 - 00;02;31;22
Saying no to homogenization in aikido,
Aikido and distance
00;02;31;22 - 00;02;34;27
teaching, body alignment
and more and more.
00;02;35;00 - 00;02;38;04
So if you haven't purchased
a copy of the book and you would like
00;02;38;04 - 00;02;42;12
to just head to lia-suzuki.com/book
00;02;42;15 - 00;02;46;04
or use the link in the YouTube
description below.
00;02;46;07 - 00;02;49;27
It's available in English
and it's even available in Italian.
00;02;49;27 - 00;02;52;27
Actually, that's just on Amazon.
00;02;53;00 - 00;02;54;29
And the book has.
00;02;54;29 - 00;02;57;17
Let me show you a little bit of this book.
00;02;57;17 - 00;03;02;07
a photo of me, when I first started,
can you see it as it's showing up
00;03;02;10 - 00;03;06;12
Some photos of my teacher, Takeda Shihan
00;03;06;15 - 00;03;10;14
my first teacher, Bill Gleason
sensei, in Boston.
00;03;10;17 - 00;03;12;17
And, some of you might recognize.
00;03;12;17 - 00;03;17;03
That's Gary Small sensei
taking ukemi there.
00;03;17;06 - 00;03;18;18
more casual
00;03;18;18 - 00;03;21;27
setting with myself
and Takeda Shihan back in the 80s.
00;03;21;27 - 00;03;24;11
Hence the crazy hair.
00;03;24;11 - 00;03;28;16
Another one of my favorite photos
of Takeda Shihan.
00;03;28;19 - 00;03;31;29
one of my favorite photos of Yamaguchi
sensei.
00;03;32;02 - 00;03;35;28
There I am, teaching a seminar
at my dojo in Hollywood.
00;03;35;28 - 00;03;39;04
Just a regular photo shoot, actually,
from a regular class.
00;03;39;10 - 00;03;41;17
Teaching in Hollywood dojo.
00;03;41;17 - 00;03;43;12
Oh. Wow.
00;03;43;12 - 00;03;47;05
my friend, Brandon Ishisaka sensei.
00;03;47;08 - 00;03;48;13
I believe that's me
00;03;48;13 - 00;03;52;06
training with his daughter,
who now I think is, like 16 years old.
00;03;52;09 - 00;03;56;10
Anyway, she's super cute,
And she's doing great.
00;03;56;10 - 00;03;57;09
She's still training.
00;03;57;09 - 00;04;00;06
if you haven't gotten the book
and you'd like to get one,
00;04;00;06 - 00;04;03;01
just look in the description below
this video
00;04;03;01 - 00;04;06;13
and there's a link there
that you can click on to order your copy.
00;04;06;13 - 00;04;07;28
Now let's get back to the video.
00;04;07;28 - 00;04;10;11
Analyze it later.
00;04;10;11 - 00;04;13;08
There's no substitute for it.
00;04;13;11 - 00;04;16;09
We get our timing,
00;04;16;09 - 00;04;18;27
our relationship to our partner.
00;04;18;27 - 00;04;21;27
You can't get that from a book or a video.
00;04;21;29 - 00;04;25;11
And we gain a presence.
00;04;25;14 - 00;04;28;07
Once you've been training for years
and years and years, you develop
00;04;28;07 - 00;04;29;08
a certain presence.
00;04;29;08 - 00;04;32;22
I wonder if anybody else
has had this experience.
00;04;32;25 - 00;04;35;25
Now this has happened
a a number of times, actually.
00;04;36;00 - 00;04;40;01
time, a gentleman came to my dojo
00;04;40;04 - 00;04;44;06
and he was very polite and,
he said, I was hoping to train
00;04;44;06 - 00;04;49;14
here, and I did Aikido 30 years ago,
he said.
00;04;49;17 - 00;04;50;13
And they said, oh, wow.
00;04;50;13 - 00;04;51;01
Of course.
00;04;51;01 - 00;04;52;10
Yeah, sure.
00;04;52;10 - 00;04;55;02
And I said, by the way,
what rank did you attain?
00;04;55;02 - 00;04;59;20
He said, no, no, no, no,
I, I didn't really get any rank.
00;04;59;23 - 00;05;03;01
And I thought to myself, I thought,
00;05;03;04 - 00;05;03;24
And this is when
00;05;03;24 - 00;05;06;24
he's still in
his street clothes were at the door
00;05;06;25 - 00;05;10;28
and I thought to myself, I think nidan.
00;05;11;01 - 00;05;12;12
I thought, well, that's weird.
00;05;12;12 - 00;05;16;02
Why did I decide that he's nidan?
00;05;16;05 - 00;05;19;10
Why am I deciding, you know,
why am I guessing?
00;05;19;13 - 00;05;22;01
But for some reason, I guessed nidan.
00;05;22;01 - 00;05;25;17
He still told me that he had no rank for,
like a year.
00;05;25;17 - 00;05;31;28
And he finally told me after a year
that he got nidan from Tohei sensei.
00;05;32;01 - 00;05;34;29
And that was verified
with some other people, I think.
00;05;34;29 - 00;05;39;19
And another one, a teacher
wanted the luxury of being a student
00;05;39;21 - 00;05;40;18
at my seminar.
00;05;40;18 - 00;05;45;00
So he and his students came
and he wore a white belt,
00;05;45;03 - 00;05;46;25
and his students were all,
00;05;46;25 - 00;05;50;26
instructed to not call him sensei
when they were visiting.
00;05;50;29 - 00;05;52;18
and they were very different style.
00;05;52;18 - 00;05;58;00
So his movement,
his replication of my aikido, was,
00;05;58;02 - 00;06;03;06
he was kind of,
guessing his way through the these things.
00;06;03;06 - 00;06;06;06
I was doing
some really innovative stuff that weekend.
00;06;06;12 - 00;06;10;11
And so even though his skill
00;06;10;18 - 00;06;17;05
of replicating my movement was about
on the same level as his students,
00;06;17;08 - 00;06;17;22
I got a
00;06;17;22 - 00;06;21;18
feeling that, no, no, no,
this is not a white belt.
00;06;21;21 - 00;06;24;06
And even though he's
00;06;24;06 - 00;06;28;06
technically moving like the white belts,
I thought,
00;06;28;09 - 00;06;32;10
this is fifth dan And again,
I thought, oh, that's weird.
00;06;32;10 - 00;06;33;25
Why am I putting a number on it?
00;06;33;25 - 00;06;36;02
And it turned out he was fifth dan
00;06;36;02 - 00;06;40;22
and he and I became friends,
so I really liked that story.
00;06;40;25 - 00;06;44;20
But anyway, he developed a presence
00;06;44;23 - 00;06;48;29
from training and training and training,
the in-person training.
00;06;49;02 - 00;06;53;24
And after a while,
this presence, is noticeable.
00;06;53;26 - 00;06;58;13
And, I'm very honored
that recently people have been telling me.
00;06;58;13 - 00;07;02;18
Oh, yeah, you you fill the room
when you're up front teaching.
00;07;02;18 - 00;07;05;09
I'm like, wow. Oh, that's a new one now.
00;07;05;09 - 00;07;08;09
So, anyway,
00;07;08;15 - 00;07;10;16
you're not going to get that from
00;07;10;16 - 00;07;13;02
reading a lot of Aikido books
00;07;13;02 - 00;07;17;15
instead of going to the dojo
watching videos like this,
00;07;17;18 - 00;07;20;29
or action videos
instead of going to the dojo,
00;07;21;02 - 00;07;24;25
you got to go to the dojo
and go to seminars too.
00;07;24;28 - 00;07;28;06
I'm a big proponent of
of getting out and training
00;07;28;06 - 00;07;32;15
with a variety of people,
and there's that O sensei quote.
00;07;32;18 - 00;07;36;18
Be grateful for setbacks,
00;07;36;21 - 00;07;39;20
bad things, and bad people.
00;07;39;20 - 00;07;45;12
They're an essential tool, to learning
the art of peace or something like that.
00;07;45;15 - 00;07;47;05
So sometimes we go to a seminar.
00;07;47;05 - 00;07;48;23
I'll be I'll be honest.
00;07;48;23 - 00;07;52;00
I've been to seminars where I'm like,
oh, these people,
00;07;52;03 - 00;07;54;15
I don't like the way they're moving
00;07;54;18 - 00;07;57;02
or it's not pleasant to me.
00;07;57;02 - 00;08;00;27
Or sometimes I've been to seminars
where I've been made
00;08;00;27 - 00;08;04;22
to feel unwelcome, political things.
00;08;04;25 - 00;08;08;12
And,
I don't do that at my dojo, by the way.
00;08;08;15 - 00;08;10;25
So it is going outside
00;08;10;25 - 00;08;14;25
of your comfort zone,
but that adds to your presence.
00;08;14;28 - 00;08;19;04
So if you can train with people
who are not always necessarily
00;08;19;04 - 00;08;25;03
fun to train with,
then you get to a point where you can make
00;08;25;06 - 00;08;28;27
any situation be more fun. So.
00;08;29;00 - 00;08;32;09
So that's kind of interesting too, is
I can
00;08;32;14 - 00;08;35;14
yeah, I can get through a lot of different
things.
00;08;35;18 - 00;08;39;18
transmission,
what you get from your sensei
00;08;39;18 - 00;08;42;18
and from your senpai,
this has to be in person.
00;08;42;18 - 00;08;44;23
The bulk of it has to be in person.
00;08;44;23 - 00;08;45;16
Then. Sure.
00;08;45;16 - 00;08;48;16
Have conversations
with them afterwards, too.
00;08;48;18 - 00;08;52;28
But be there in person
If you've been watching my videos,
00;08;52;28 - 00;08;57;17
you've probably noticed that I
sometimes use Shoto or Shortsword.
00;08;57;20 - 00;09;00;12
I find that it helps students
drop their shoulders,
00;09;00;12 - 00;09;03;18
stop pushing
and really feel the technique.
00;09;03;21 - 00;09;06;09
Right now
I have a limited number of these Lia
00;09;06;09 - 00;09;09;09
Suzuki Signature Shoto available.
00;09;09;10 - 00;09;12;10
They're made in Japan from premium
Japanese white oak.
00;09;12;14 - 00;09;18;14
They're engraved with my signature,
and they're really beautifully balanced.
00;09;18;17 - 00;09;20;24
Because of the lumber shortage in Japan.
00;09;20;24 - 00;09;23;12
I was only able
to get a small batch of them.
00;09;23;12 - 00;09;27;28
So once these are gone,
that's it for the time being.
00;09;28;01 - 00;09;31;21
So if you'd like one, click
the link below to reserve yours
00;09;31;24 - 00;09;33;10
during the checkout process.
00;09;33;10 - 00;09;34;21
You'll be prompted to let me know
00;09;34;21 - 00;09;38;10
which seminar you'll attend,
and then I'll bring it right to you.
00;09;38;17 - 00;09;40;06
Now let's get back to the video.
00;09;40;06 - 00;09;43;25
if you're interested in coming
to Los Angeles, I've got two seminars
00;09;43;25 - 00;09;47;00
coming up this year
where we could train together.
00;09;47;00 - 00;09;50;10
The one is at the end of May,
and that specifically
00;09;50;13 - 00;09;53;21
is people from all different styles.
00;09;53;24 - 00;09;56;24
So that is exactly what I'm talking about.
00;09;56;24 - 00;10;01;11
It's Ikeda sensei, myself and Bruno
Gonzalez sensei, all different styles.
00;10;01;14 - 00;10;03;02
So that's going to attract
00;10;03;02 - 00;10;06;28
all different types of people
with all different types of aikido.
00;10;07;01 - 00;10;08;20
So it would really benefit you.
00;10;08;20 - 00;10;11;11
And then the other one is in July.
00;10;11;11 - 00;10;13;27
It's a five day camp.
00;10;13;27 - 00;10;16;00
I'll be the main teacher for that.
00;10;16;00 - 00;10;21;12
And there will probably be a couple
other teachers with like one slot or so.
00;10;21;15 - 00;10;25;14
But that's the 30th anniversary
of AKI USA.
00;10;25;17 - 00;10;29;15
And so that's probably
going to attract people from outside also.
00;10;29;18 - 00;10;34;07
So these are really excellent ways
to gain so much.
00;10;34;07 - 00;10;39;10
Not just technique
but also gain so much presence.
00;10;39;10 - 00;10;41;17
And this has to be done in person.
00;10;41;17 - 00;10;44;12
another really interesting thing is how
00;10;44;12 - 00;10;47;12
community shapes practice.
00;10;47;16 - 00;10;51;28
you have a shared effort mutual learning
long term growth.
00;10;52;03 - 00;10;55;19
I've been at seminars
where there's different teachers
00;10;55;21 - 00;11;00;06
and all of a sudden like 20
people walk through the door
00;11;00;09 - 00;11;05;05
five minutes before this teacher's class
and they all go to that teacher's class,
00;11;05;05 - 00;11;09;09
and then that teacher's class
finishes and they all leave.
00;11;09;12 - 00;11;11;16
I think, oh my gosh, what a waste.
00;11;11;16 - 00;11;16;26
They didn't go to the other teacher's
classes or You get more from the training.
00;11;16;29 - 00;11;20;15
If you spend time
with the other practitioners,
00;11;20;19 - 00;11;23;26
the other attendees, between the training.
00;11;23;29 - 00;11;26;10
So the lunches,
the dinners and all of that,
00;11;26;10 - 00;11;30;28
if you have a really great conversation
at the restaurant
00;11;31;01 - 00;11;35;04
with this person, and then the next day
you're training with them and you're stuck
00;11;35;04 - 00;11;40;11
and you just can't move them, well,
then it's easier to look inside yourself,
00;11;40;11 - 00;11;42;28
to look at your own aikido
because you're like, wow,
00;11;42;28 - 00;11;44;29
no, I had a great time
talking with this guy.
00;11;44;29 - 00;11;50;00
But but this is awful right now
that I can't throw him.
00;11;50;03 - 00;11;53;23
So you can't tell yourself,
oh, he's being a jerk because he's not.
00;11;53;26 - 00;11;56;12
You just had a nice conversation with him
the night before.
00;11;56;12 - 00;11;57;15
He. He's not a jerk.
00;11;57;15 - 00;12;00;07
We've already established
that. It's confirmed.
00;12;00;07 - 00;12;02;15
This person is not a jerk.
00;12;02;15 - 00;12;04;15
Oh, but I can't move him.
00;12;04;15 - 00;12;07;01
Okay. Must be my aikido.
00;12;07;01 - 00;12;12;11
So when we spend this time
off of the mat with each other,
00;12;12;14 - 00;12;15;19
it helps our actual training.
00;12;15;22 - 00;12;17;20
So speaking of spending time
00;12;17;20 - 00;12;21;06
off the mat, and I mentioned the seminars
that I've got coming up.
00;12;21;09 - 00;12;24;01
Next week,
00;12;24;01 - 00;12;27;01
registration will open for the five day
camp.
00;12;27;07 - 00;12;32;05
Again, it's a, celebration of my 30th
00;12;32;05 - 00;12;36;03
anniversary,
the 30th anniversary of AKI USA.
00;12;36;06 - 00;12;40;00
I'll be the main teacher,
and there will be a couple other teachers
00;12;40;03 - 00;12;46;01
doing one class or so,
and lunches will be provided at the dojo.
00;12;46;04 - 00;12;47;22
I've also got some other things
00;12;47;22 - 00;12;52;06
coming up at the end of next month,
May, May 28th through 31st.
00;12;52;09 - 00;12;56;14
We've got a four day immersion,
and that's with Ikeda Shihan myself
00;12;56;14 - 00;13;02;00
and Bruno Gonzalez sensei,
and registration is still open for that.
00;13;02;03 - 00;13;04;21
But space is limited.
00;13;04;21 - 00;13;08;22
So look in the description
below, find the link
00;13;08;25 - 00;13;11;17
and go and jump on to those two things.
00;13;11;17 - 00;13;14;26
Also, the, the five day camp.
00;13;14;29 - 00;13;19;00
If you go to that link,
even though registration is not yet open,
00;13;19;03 - 00;13;22;20
you can get on the notifications list,
so you'll be notified immediately
00;13;22;20 - 00;13;24;03
when it opens.
00;13;24;03 - 00;13;26;24
I've got other seminars coming up in June.
00;13;26;24 - 00;13;29;24
I'll be in the UK and Ireland,
00;13;29;28 - 00;13;33;15
and the last weekend of August,
I'll be in Shanghai
00;13;33;18 - 00;13;38;19
and then September I'll be in Bonn
and some other German cities.
00;13;38;22 - 00;13;43;00

and Redlands, California.
00;13;43;00 - 00;13;45;16

00;13;45;16 - 00;13;48;27
and I'm really looking forward
to training together in person.

00;13;51;02 - 00;13;52;22
But let's train.
00;13;52;22 - 00;13;54;24
All right. Thanks so much for tuning in.
00;13;54;24 - 00;13;56;04
See you soon. Bye bye.
