00;00;00;00 - 00;00;04;16
At my first aikido class in Japan
back in 1987.
00;00;04;26 - 00;00;08;03
I noticed something in the first
five minutes
00;00;08;12 - 00;00;11;04
that was completely different
00;00;11;04 - 00;00;15;22
from what I had experienced in the dojo
that I had been training in in the USA,
00;00;16;03 - 00;00;18;27
and that was the senior students.
00;00;18;27 - 00;00;21;17
Yes, they were warming up physically,
00;00;21;17 - 00;00;24;17
but they were also warming up
their attention.
00;00;24;23 - 00;00;27;09
As soon as they walked into the dojo,
00;00;27;09 - 00;00;30;09
I noticed, oh,
this is a little bit different.
00;00;30;11 - 00;00;33;11
There was a βkombanwa.β
00;00;34;11 - 00;00;34;28
That was it.
00;00;34;28 - 00;00;36;18
Hello.
00;00;36;18 - 00;00;39;13
Good evening. And then get changed.
00;00;39;13 - 00;00;45;05
They were focused on each thing, rather
than just kind of having a social hour.
00;00;45;05 - 00;00;50;20
It was very different from
if we got there early in the US.
00;00;51;00 - 00;00;53;13
In the US when we got there early
00;00;53;13 - 00;00;56;26
we would warm up
but we'd chat while we were warming up.
00;00;57;09 - 00;01;00;02
Some people wouldn't
warm up at all physically.
00;01;00;02 - 00;01;01;28
They would just be hanging out
and chatting,
00;01;01;28 - 00;01;04;27
having a nice social time beforehand.
00;01;04;27 - 00;01;06;07
That didn't happen.
00;01;07;25 - 00;01;08;21
I think it's happening
00;01;08;21 - 00;01;12;20
a little bit in our Japanese dojos
sometimes,
00;01;13;17 - 00;01;18;15
but not nearly to the extent
that I see it in the USA and back then.
00;01;18;15 - 00;01;19;27
Not at all.
00;01;19;27 - 00;01;20;22
Not at all.
00;01;20;22 - 00;01;22;10
And nobody took this personally.
00;01;22;10 - 00;01;24;14
Like nobody wants to talk with me.
00;01;24;14 - 00;01;27;01
It was just
there was a hush over the room,
00;01;27;01 - 00;01;31;13
and there were 20 or 30 people
warming up physically.
00;01;31;13 - 00;01;35;18
But also you could see that
they're warming up their attention.
00;01;36;05 - 00;01;39;08
So one difference is that, first of all,
00;01;40;04 - 00;01;42;18
we never called it stretching.
00;01;42;18 - 00;01;46;16
the term that we used in Japan,
I think I think most or all dojos in Japan
00;01;46;25 - 00;01;49;28
βJunbi Taisoβ preparation exercises.
00;01;50;25 - 00;01;51;29
Right.
00;01;51;29 - 00;01;56;09
And my sensei, Takeda Sensei, he would
he would say to me sometimes, Lia,
00;01;56;17 - 00;01;57;12
what's all this.
00;01;57;12 - 00;02;00;21
The why are people warming up at the dojo
and doing all this stretching?
00;02;00;21 - 00;02;02;02
Canβt they do that on the train?
00;02;03;26 - 00;02;06;26
And then
we had a 15 minute walk to the dojo.
00;02;07;11 - 00;02;10;11
So if you're in your 20s or 30s,
00;02;10;18 - 00;02;11;17
that should be enough.
00;02;11;17 - 00;02;15;19
Maybe if you're older, maybe you do need
more time to to stretch your muscles.
00;02;16;00 - 00;02;19;11
But anyway, so there's Junbi Taiso
00;02;19;11 - 00;02;24;17
and I believe that this Junbi Taiso
the preparatory movement
00;02;24;17 - 00;02;27;19
and exercise is really to get all of us
00;02;27;19 - 00;02;30;26
in sync before we start the class,
00;02;31;12 - 00;02;36;10
just get in sync and you are in charge
00;02;36;10 - 00;02;40;05
of warming up your body,
but also warming up your mind.
00;02;40;15 - 00;02;44;02
Try to empty out
from the day at the office
00;02;44;02 - 00;02;47;13
or kids or,
you know, whatever you've got going on,
00;02;48;00 - 00;02;51;07
whatever you just left behind
before you came to the dojo.
00;02;51;28 - 00;02;56;11
At a certain point, I even noticed that
00;02;56;20 - 00;03;00;19
walking to the dojo,
people were kind of warming up mentally.
00;03;00;19 - 00;03;03;02
And yes,
there would sometimes be conversation.
00;03;03;02 - 00;03;07;19
I remember meeting Takeda sensei
a few times, just a few times
00;03;08;04 - 00;03;12;06
getting off of the train,
and we would walk to the dojo together.
00;03;12;06 - 00;03;16;16
First of all, we walked at a good clip
and it was like
00;03;16;16 - 00;03;21;21
he was just eating up the ground
and we would have conversation.
00;03;21;21 - 00;03;23;25
And he was always positive.
00;03;25;00 - 00;03;26;12
Always positive.
00;03;26;12 - 00;03;29;12
I know he must have had some days
that weren't great,
00;03;29;28 - 00;03;31;04
but he didn't let on.
00;03;31;04 - 00;03;32;10
So that was really cool.
00;03;32;10 - 00;03;35;18
Like already on our way to the dojo,
00;03;36;16 - 00;03;38;29
there was this positivity
that was building.
00;03;38;29 - 00;03;41;29
Then when we got to the dojo,
we would go in, we would bow in
00;03;42;19 - 00;03;45;21
and of course onto the mats
right there at the door.
00;03;45;21 - 00;03;52;06
So, you know, you go into the
changing room and then come out what?
00;03;52;06 - 00;03;57;13
You prime at the beginning of the session
or before the beginning of the session
00;03;57;26 - 00;04;02;15
is really what you're going to be training
for the next 90 minutes.
00;04;03;02 - 00;04;07;01
So if you start off with all this clutter
in your mind
00;04;07;01 - 00;04;12;08
and feeding that clutter by talking
and having these social conversations,
00;04;12;21 - 00;04;16;13
that's how your brain is going to remain
to a certain degree
00;04;17;01 - 00;04;20;27
for the next 90 minutes or 2 hours
or one hour, whatever your class is.
00;04;21;07 - 00;04;25;11
So working on getting rid of that
from the moment you step
00;04;25;11 - 00;04;30;05
in, step through the door
is really, really beneficial.
00;04;30;28 - 00;04;35;25
And arriving at the mat,
getting on the mat already listening
00;04;35;27 - 00;04;39;20
is to already put yourself in a meditative
frame of mind.
00;04;39;20 - 00;04;43;00
And it's also a technical choice.
00;04;43;00 - 00;04;46;00
You're going to benefit more technically
00;04;46;06 - 00;04;49;27
if your mind is empty and free and relaxed
00;04;51;01 - 00;04;51;29
and focused.
00;04;51;29 - 00;04;56;20
You know, I was always amazed
when Takeda sensei seemed to read my mind.
00;04;56;20 - 00;04;59;21
when I had had a frustrating day,
it seemed,
00;04;59;23 - 00;05;02;28
for example, we're doing shomenuchi ikkyo.
00;05;03;26 - 00;05;06;29
And after a little while
00;05;06;29 - 00;05;11;12
he would say, okay, Lia here, grab tight,
and he have me do
00;05;11;12 - 00;05;15;03
ryote mochi or morotedori,
depending on what you call it.
00;05;15;19 - 00;05;17;09
Two hands on one, he'd say.
00;05;17;09 - 00;05;19;25
Grabbed tight, tighter, tighter, tighter.
00;05;19;25 - 00;05;21;01
And then bam!
00;05;21;01 - 00;05;24;01
Kokyunage where you bam, right?
00;05;25;11 - 00;05;28;07
And I don't know why,
but that was always a reset for me
00;05;28;07 - 00;05;31;09
taking that ukemi
for that exact technique.
00;05;32;00 - 00;05;34;14
I was like
00;05;34;14 - 00;05;37;14
Especially if you're the teacher,
00;05;37;17 - 00;05;41;15
if you are quiet and you quiet your mind
at the very beginning of the class,
00;05;41;15 - 00;05;42;19
and then you see this person
00;05;42;19 - 00;05;45;19
comes through the door,
that person's comes through the door,
00;05;45;24 - 00;05;50;07
you can read them more accurately
I had my own English school
00;05;50;11 - 00;05;54;01
in Japan, so I would
sometimes be stressed from work.
00;05;54;01 - 00;05;55;13
I had some employees.
00;05;55;13 - 00;05;58;19
But anyway, the time,
the few times that he did do that
00;05;59;11 - 00;06;02;08
just break from whatever he was teaching
and then like,
00;06;02;08 - 00;06;05;11
okay, Lia needs to be thrown
until she can't stand up anymore.
00;06;05;27 - 00;06;10;01
They were really times
when I was so incredibly stressed.
00;06;10;01 - 00;06;12;06
So, like, how did he read me?
00;06;12;06 - 00;06;13;03
He was open to it.
00;06;13;03 - 00;06;16;15
The mind was was, attentive and receptive.
00;06;16;15 - 00;06;20;04
another thing that I find more in Japan,
00;06;20;04 - 00;06;23;14
listening internally
when they quiet the mind like this.
00;06;24;01 - 00;06;26;05
What's available today?
00;06;26;05 - 00;06;26;14
Right.
00;06;26;14 - 00;06;27;25
What's available in me?
00;06;27;25 - 00;06;28;28
What is sensei doing?
00;06;28;28 - 00;06;31;07
He's doing Shihonage, Ah, got it. No.
00;06;32;06 - 00;06;34;19
If the mind is really quiet, then
look to see.
00;06;34;19 - 00;06;37;20
Is there something different about the way
he's doing Shihonage today?
00;06;37;27 - 00;06;38;24
From yesterday.
00;06;38;24 - 00;06;39;11
And then if you're
00;06;39;11 - 00;06;42;25
looking really carefully,
then you might get chosen for ukemi also.
00;06;43;06 - 00;06;46;28
In which case you can feel
really carefully if this is quiet,
00;06;46;28 - 00;06;50;29
if this isn't quiet,
you're going to miss so much information.
00;06;50;29 - 00;06;55;17
So how do you apply this
when no one's modeling it for you?
00;06;56;04 - 00;06;58;19
That's really a challenge, actually.
00;06;58;19 - 00;07;02;13
So back in the US, it's kind of a custom
00;07;02;13 - 00;07;06;01
in a lot of dojos
to be friendly and nice before the bow-in
00;07;06;01 - 00;07;09;04
and have a nice little chat,
catch up with somebody.
00;07;10;20 - 00;07;13;18
I don't do it.
00;07;13;18 - 00;07;14;21
And a lot of times
00;07;14;21 - 00;07;17;21
people see me as being antisocial.
00;07;17;23 - 00;07;21;21
I'm sorry
if you ever see me on the mat before
00;07;21;21 - 00;07;25;00
bow-in, like, especially like five minutes
before bow-in.
00;07;25;17 - 00;07;29;22
And I'm not engaging with anybody,
and I don't answer your question.
00;07;30;11 - 00;07;32;02
Please understand. I'm getting ready.
00;07;33;02 - 00;07;35;13
So you
get ready however you want to get ready.
00;07;35;13 - 00;07;39;08
But that's how I get ready, because that's
what I experienced in Japan.
00;07;39;08 - 00;07;41;12
And I, I noticed the benefit.
00;07;41;12 - 00;07;43;17
There was a huge benefit.
00;07;43;17 - 00;07;46;28
So I like to arrive early.
00;07;47;13 - 00;07;49;08
I usually check my phone when I get there.
00;07;49;08 - 00;07;52;08
I wish I could wean myself off
my phone more,
00;07;52;22 - 00;07;58;16
but anyway, once I've checked my phone
and then gotten on the mat, if I'm taking
00;07;58;16 - 00;08;01;25
someone's class, I try to get on the mat
ten minutes before bow-in.
00;08;01;27 - 00;08;04;09
I warm up my body, I warm up my brain.
00;08;04;09 - 00;08;05;13
I empty my brain.
00;08;05;13 - 00;08;08;20
That is, if I'm teaching,
00;08;08;20 - 00;08;11;20
I still like to do that.
00;08;11;20 - 00;08;13;23
And then sometimes I'll step off the mat.
00;08;13;23 - 00;08;16;20
Well, sometimes not, sometimes I'll stay.
00;08;16;20 - 00;08;18;24
But anyway, I warm up the body.
00;08;18;24 - 00;08;22;07
But more importantly, even,
warm up my brain.
00;08;22;07 - 00;08;23;14
Try to empty it out.
00;08;23;14 - 00;08;25;13
So if you want to try this.
00;08;25;13 - 00;08;28;12
It might feel a little weird.
00;08;28;12 - 00;08;30;29
And it might be a little unnerving
00;08;30;29 - 00;08;33;29
to your partners and your friends.
00;08;34;02 - 00;08;37;05
Just tell them, hey,
for the next two weeks,
00;08;37;19 - 00;08;40;10
you know, don't say just for tonight,
because then you have to explain it
00;08;40;10 - 00;08;43;15
to everybody, and then tomorrow
you're not for the next two weeks,
00;08;43;15 - 00;08;45;23
for the next month,
for the next three months, whatever.
00;08;45;23 - 00;08;49;06
I'm going to try this thing that
Lia Suzuki was encouraging people to do.
00;08;49;12 - 00;08;50;01
I'm going to like,
00;08;50;01 - 00;08;53;25
try not talking to anybody
before the bow and just explain it.
00;08;54;08 - 00;08;57;04
So the first couple times
you're going to have to tell people that,
00;08;57;04 - 00;09;00;22
and then after that keep doing it and see,
see if you like it.
00;09;00;23 - 00;09;03;29
And I think that most or, or
00;09;03;29 - 00;09;07;07
all people will go like, oh okay.
00;09;07;07 - 00;09;08;01
Cool.
00;09;08;01 - 00;09;08;23
Yeah. You do.
00;09;08;23 - 00;09;11;23
You all right?
I bet you'll really like it.
00;09;11;27 - 00;09;15;10
when you do that, take an honest
00;09;15;10 - 00;09;19;10
reading of what
you're bringing to the mat.
00;09;19;26 - 00;09;22;18
And if you feel lousy that day,
you had a terrible day.
00;09;22;18 - 00;09;23;24
Be honest.
00;09;23;24 - 00;09;24;10
Own it.
00;09;24;10 - 00;09;27;03
Yeah, man, I sure do feel terrible, man.
00;09;27;03 - 00;09;28;16
But I got here, man.
00;09;28;16 - 00;09;30;00
Who was difficult.
00;09;30;00 - 00;09;31;23
It was tempting to go home.
00;09;31;23 - 00;09;34;07
Right?
Whatever it is, or I feel fantastic today.
00;09;34;07 - 00;09;35;17
I can't wait to get going.
00;09;35;17 - 00;09;37;08
Get get going with this class.
00;09;37;08 - 00;09;41;14
If you're a teacher, you don't
you don't need to explain it
00;09;41;14 - 00;09;44;19
to your students every time,
but you might want to give them 1 or 2
00;09;44;20 - 00;09;48;24
heads up,
just like I, explained previously.
00;09;49;21 - 00;09;52;01
So anyway,
00;09;52;01 - 00;09;55;22
if you see me at a seminar
and I do have some seminars coming up,
00;09;55;22 - 00;09;58;26
I've got one coming up
actually this weekend and in Montana.
00;09;59;05 - 00;10;03;17
So all you people in Montana,
when you see me,
00;10;03;17 - 00;10;07;08
if I don't answer you or I seem unfriendly
or something, look at the clock.
00;10;07;28 - 00;10;10;10
And if we're, like, 5 to 10 minutes
00;10;10;10 - 00;10;13;14
away from Bow-in, that's what's going on.
00;10;13;14 - 00;10;14;25
Don't take it personally.
00;10;14;25 - 00;10;15;19
Join me.
00;10;15;19 - 00;10;18;29
Just sit down right next to me
and do your warm
00;10;18;29 - 00;10;22;06
ups to silently
so that I really like that, actually.
00;10;22;23 - 00;10;27;05
So anyway, by the way,
if you're interested in more topics
00;10;27;05 - 00;10;30;15
like this,
I have a weekly video training newsletter
00;10;30;15 - 00;10;33;28
that goes out, so you can jump on that
in the link in the description.
00;10;34;13 - 00;10;37;29
So I really do recommend
that you give this a try.
00;10;38;13 - 00;10;43;00
The practice
our practice starts before the practice.
00;10;43;15 - 00;10;47;03
If it starts before the bow-in and see
00;10;47;03 - 00;10;51;04
how much earlier
you can make your practice start.
00;10;51;14 - 00;10;54;09
If you're taking the train already
on the train,
00;10;54;09 - 00;10;58;00
be preparing, preparing,
preparing on the walk.
00;10;58;04 - 00;11;00;18
Don't be like looking at your phone
while you're walking.
00;11;00;18 - 00;11;03;00
Just prepare, prepare, prepare.
00;11;03;00 - 00;11;06;26
Get your attention primed and see
00;11;07;29 - 00;11;11;01
how much further
you can stretch that out before bow-in
00;11;11;02 - 00;11;16;27
What you bring to the mat in those opening
few minutes really sets the ceiling.
00;11;16;27 - 00;11;18;26
It raises the ceiling for you.
00;11;18;26 - 00;11;25;15
You'll be able to go further, and you will
contribute towards a more meditative
00;11;25;26 - 00;11;29;26
and probably more meditative
and intense in a good way,
00;11;30;18 - 00;11;33;01
atmosphere in the dojo.
00;11;33;01 - 00;11;36;14
So give it a try and come back to this
video and leave a comment.
00;11;36;14 - 00;11;40;25
Let me know how it goes
or send an email when you jump on that.
00;11;40;25 - 00;11;45;24
The newsletter,
the weekly video training newsletters.
