đŸŽ„ WATCH: What Makes Aikido Feel Soft Without Being Weak

Softness in Aikido is often misunderstood.

From the outside, it can look effortless — even gentle. But anyone who has trained for a while knows that the softness you see in experienced practitioners isn’t weakness at all.

It’s responsiveness.

In this week’s video, I talk about what actually makes Aikido feel soft and why that softness only works when it’s supported by structure, alignment, and repetition.

It’s one of those ideas that can completely change how your techniques feel on the mat.

Watch the full video here:

Then try experimenting with this idea in your next class and see what you notice.

🌿 Your Practice Prompt

During your next class, focus on removing unnecessary tension from your shoulders, knees, and lower back while maintaining a stable center.

Instead of trying to “do” the technique, pay attention to what information you receive from your partner through touch, balance, and movement.

Notice how much easier it becomes to adapt when your body stays responsive.

Share your experience—I read every reply.

đŸŽ„ WATCH: Why Force Feels Effective in Aikido — Until It Doesn’t
Sometimes the strongest students face the biggest challenge in Aikido. If you're stronger than your partner, techniques may seem to work immediately. Your partner falls, everything appears successful, and it can feel like you're progressing quickly. But that early success can be misleading. In this week’s video, I talk about why relying on strength can eventually stall your development—and why ...
đŸŽ„ WATCH: How Aikido Training Evolves Over Time
When you first start Aikido, your focus is simple: Just get through class without getting hurt. You’re trying to remember the movements, figure out which foot goes where, and survive your first attempts at ukemi. But over time, something interesting happens. Your training begins to shift — from survival
to refinement
to sensitivity, timing, and efficiency. In this week’s video, I talk about how...
đŸŽ„ WATCH: Why Aikido Progress Can’t Be Rushed
Have you ever felt like you’re behind in your Aikido progress? Behind others. Behind where you “should” be. Behind in rank or skill. This week’s video is about something most practitioners don’t talk about: Why Aikido can’t be rushed. And why trying to force progress can actually slow you down. I share: Why plateaus are a milestone Why collecting techniques isn’t real progress Why deep unde...
